Tributes are pouring in for the late Stellenbosch University Rector Professor Russel Botman. Botman died in his sleep at the age of 60 at his Stellenbosch home Friday night.

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu has described his passing as a loss to education while Western Cape Premier Helen Zille says Botman will be remembered for enriching South Africa’s academics.

Stellenbosch Mayor, Conrad Sidego, says he will remember Botman as a great educator.

“He was more than a rector of a university, he was a community leader and I have the highest regard for him. He’s also internationally respected as a theologian. He was also a great educator and a great transformer. He wanted to be inclusive and get as many of the under privileged into university. He went to great lengths to secure that. So, I think it’s a great loss.”

Botman was born in Bloemfontein on October 18, 1953.
